Friends of Portugal establishes social enterprise projects, hosts business & cultural excursions between the US and Portugal, fosters community outreach, and organizes educational programs and seminars for personal and professional development, all through innovative and entrepreneurial initiatives with a Christ-centered approach.

Friends of Portugal is a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in North America with teams operating in the U.S. and Portugal.

Friends of Portugal was organized by a group of American and Portuguese leaders committed to assisting ordinary Portuguese people facing systemic, structural, and economic challenges. The global economic crisis hit Portugal especially hard, resulting in significant and rapid rises in unemployment coupled with large cuts in social services and working-age individuals leaving the country to seek opportunities elsewhere.

FOP focuses on " bottom up" micro-enterprises and creating self-employment. The organization provides support to specific projects in Portugal that assist Portuguese in a variety of areas including life skills and coaching, entrepreneurship and job preparation, basic food and clothing, ministry training and faith-based assistance, and other areas that empower the Portuguese to grow economically, spiritually, and within community in positive and uplifting ways.

Friends of Portugal raises funds for projects, hosts seminars on business skills, justice, entrepreneurship, and related topics, and coordinates study and research trips for international groups, schools, churches, etc. FOP provides key funding for A Ponte, a Lisbon area co-work space and business incubator, a vintage clothing store in Massamá, furniture renovation, and other services. FOP's overriding concern is to provide opportunities of hope for Portuguese.
